Inalienable Rights To Nature
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Lately I’ve been spending a little less time with design blogs and a little more time following the times…the New York Times that is. I was thrilled this morning to learn about the new laws of nature that Ecuador voted on and passed yesterday giving “Ecuador’s tropical forests, islands, rivers and air similar legal rights to those normally granted to humans.” The set of articles that have passed are the first to appear in any Constitution. One passage within these newly adopted set of articles reads that nature” has the right to exist , persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles, structure, functions and its processes in evolution.”

I was so excited to read about this major development in Ecuador. I visited twice last year and I was fortunate enough to visit nearly the whole country. A family member of mine took me on extensive rainforest tours where I took the above photos. I can’t even describe what I felt there. It was a truly amazing and unique experience. I’ll never forget how it felt to hold a baby monkey in my arms and the joy I had sitting beside him sharing sugar cane. I remember feeling incredibly sad at the thought of these beautiful rain forests being destroyed and what that would mean for this monkey or the parrots I saw sitting in the trees above me or the gorgeous orchids the size of large fists that bloom every spring.

What a relief to read that the Ecuadorian government is taking such major strides to ensure that this land will be protected. A set of laws granting inalienable rights to nature are the first of their kind and certainly something I hope will continue to catch on all over the world. Click here to view this article.
