Pintameldia

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Earlier this morning I discovered the work of Spanish artist Esti from Pintameldia (via Design for Mankind.) I literally had to stop myself from spending the next two hours going through page after page of her stunning blog. Her work really spoke to a certain side of myself, and it was quite peaceful to sip on my coffee and  pore over her work. I was particularly drawn to her “Me and My Ghost” series in which she has created the most beautiful illustration work over portraits of herself, her husband, and her readers that have submitted their own portraits. Incredible! I would to have my own portrait done. I wonder if it’s too late to submit? If you have an hour to spare to check out her blog, I highly suggest it. It’s LOVELY!

In their own words, “The ethos of Dear Deer is to enable DIY (‘Do It Yourself’) creativity.  A self sufficient community of art, music, fashion and workshops that encourage all forms of creative thinking between contemporary artists and designers.” Recently, Dear Deer has branched off with their own online magazine entitled, “Oh! Dear” which focuses on independent culture throughout Mexico and all over the world.

It’s fantastic to see what an exciting design mecca Mexico is becoming! I love when I stumble upon amazing venues like Deer Dear, which promotes and features independent designers. I would be thrilled to visit this fantastic shop and studio someday soon! Until then, I’ll just have to enjoy the photos of their lovely space.

Silvina Romero

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

I’ve been admiring the work of Argentinean textile artist Silvina Romero for quite some time. Most of Silvina’s extraordinary work is created from recycled pieces of fabric and thread. While many designers have chosen to work with recycled materials for environmental reasons, Silvina took this approach out of necessity during the height of the economic crisis in Argentina back in 2001. It was a way for her to continue producing beautiful work during a difficult time. I find both her personal story and her work completely inspirational!
